The Public
Art Program
MECCA's Public Art Program allows youth
and adults to work together in a variety of settings.
The Public Art Program includes the following:
The Emerging Artist
Program
Emerging artists produce artwork often mentored by local professional
artists. Emerging artists build their portfolios, receive stipends for
their art, and work toward becoming professionals. Recent projects include:
- Where the Wild Things Are, a mural by Derek Harvick, in Eugene, OR
(see enclosed article).
- Artist Watch, a public painting demonstration and art show involving
three emerging artists at a local pub.
- The first annual MECCA Studio Sale with work by Emerging Artists
across Lane County
The Arte Grande
Program
Youth and adults cooperatively design and build public art. Lead
artists in the program serve as facilitators and offer technical assistance.
Recent projects include:
- For the People, Of the People, By the People, a mosaic sculpture in
the Whiteaker
Neighborhood of Eugene (see enclosed article).
Educational Art
Parties
For schools, birthday parties, or fun gatherings, your group can have an
art party!
A MECCA artist will come to you with materials, supplies and examples of
projects.
Projects often involve the use of scrap materials salvaged from local
businesses. To request an art party or have a brochure sent to you, email us.
The
Community-Building Art Program
MECCA hosts a series of workshops at a community site, to a specific
neighborhood or group. Materials, tools and examples are included. Recent
projects include:
- A summer workshop series at Camp Wilani in Veneta, Oregon
- Art Workshops at Jefferson Middle School in Eugene, Oregon
- Workshops at low-income housing developments in Eugene and
Springfield, in cooperation with the University of Oregon Community Outreach
Partnership Center.
